Poetry Evening: Care

Care is the theme for this month’s poetry evening, on Thursday 24th April,  – . Care appears in many forms, from relationships with loved ones and looking after the needs of others or our environment, concerns for global issues, or simply taking care in how we live our own lives. Open to all and refreshments are provided. It’s free to attend, but donations are welcome.

Even Here, Even Now: PechaKucha

A PechaKucha is a presentation in which you show 20 slides for 20 seconds each and talk about each one. The idea is to tell a story visually in a short and simple way. This hybrid event – taking place on Friday 25th April 6 – 8 pm in person and online – will feature PechaKucha presentations from creative people in Orkney, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides. It will happen simultaneously at An Lanntair, Mareel in Shetland and in Taigh Chearsabhagh, with artists also joining online from Orkney. If you prefer, you can also join online from wherever you are.

Table Top Sale

Women & The Wind Screening & Swim

Join for a screening of Women & The Wind, the story of 3 women crossing the Atlantic on a 50 year old catamaran. If you’re local, you’re invited to join on the eve of the 2nd of May at Carinish Hall, starting off with an (optional) group sea swim before at Baleshare beach. There will be hot drinks to warm up on arrival and a wee tuck shop with snacks. After the swim everyone is encouraged to stay and discuss the film over a cuppa. Basket Making Course

Over two days, you will learn to make ‘stake and strand’ baskets with basket maker Dawn Susan. Dawn is a professional willow weaver living in Great Bernera. She teaches basket making using willow grown on her own croft. The course is suitable for all abilities.

 

Day 1 (Mon 12th May): 10.30am-4.30 pm: Learn to make a small round basket.

Day 2 (Tue 13th May): 10am-4pm: Make a larger basket, ideal for carrying kindling or a variety of other items, with a handle if desired.

Talk: William Gillies, Modernism and Nation with biographer Andrew McPherson

Andrew McPherson, author of the biography William Gillies: Modernism and Nation in British Art, has been researching the life, times and works of William Gillies for over twenty years, finding both an explanation and a corrective for the recognition Gillies lacks. Andrew will present a talk in Taigh Chearsabhagh on Friday 16th May, at 7pm, where he will will speak about his remarkable account of Gillies, which uncovers paintings not seen before and reveals new meanings among his portraits, still lifes and landscapes.
