Tristan da Cunha Talk, Part 1

Comann Eachdraidh Eirisgeidh are holding a series of informal talks by Alasdair MacEachan. The next talk will be on ‘Tristan da Cunha’ PART 1, on Saturday 26th February at 7pm.

 

2023, marks the 60th anniversary of the return of the islanders to Tristan da Cunha, following the evacuation of their island home two years earlier as a result of a volcanic eruption close to the homes of the 260 island residents. Alasdair MacEachen looks at the history of that event and his own visit to the island, regarded as the world’s remotest community.

Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist a Tuath invite you to come along and enjoy a range of free winter wellbeing activities on Tuesdays in February and March, 2-3.30pm.

 

Interactive activities on offer – an inspiring mix of heritage storytelling, Gaelic music and songs to sing, video, collage, art or use your own creativity.

 

Tea and biscuits available – if you can, bring your own cup – help us to save carbon!

Whist Drive for Uist Cat Rescue

Our Climate Story

Come along to Cothrom at 1:30pm for an interactive session from Climate Hebrides as part of their guest speaker series.

 

Join Caroline Willis, Outreach Officer for Climate Hebrides, for a bitesize session on climate change in the Outer Hebrides. Take a look at climate change globally down to our doorstep. Understand how we can react to climate change already happening in our local area and what we can do to minimise further change. Have your voice heard by documenting your concerns on the ‘Our Climate Story’ map.

Exploring Climate Change and Sustainibility

Sustainability and climate change are key concerns for organisations across the public, private and third sectors, including small businesses and social enterprises. Numerous challenges face these organisations, both within their own structure and how they interact in the wider environment. Sustainability and climate change are also connected to how you expand, scale and develop what your organisation is doing.

 

This programmes explores these themes, looking at what is already working, how to sustain this and identifying what needs to change and how to make this happen.

 

This programme consists of two half days and is specifically for small businesses and social enterprises in the Western Isles to examine and develop their organisational and financial sustainability, whilst helping them to tackle the climate emergency at the same time.  Participants will also be assisted with applying for funding from the Ideas Into Action Funding order to put the suggestions that they generate through the programme into action.

 

The programme will explore:

 

  • What does sustainability & climate change mean for your organisation?
  • Evaluate your assets and strengths
  • Visioning for the future
  • Embed resilience
  • Experience Design Thinking and how this might be applied to building your sustainability whilst tackling the climate emergency
  • Explore sustaining motivation

 

Session 1 – Monday 4 March 2024, 9:30am – 12:15pm

Session 2 – Monday 11 March 2024, 13:00pm – 15:30pm

 

This programme will be delivered using Zoom.

 

Fully Funded by the Outer Hebrides Climate Hub (i.e. no cost to participating small businesses or social enterprises)

Safe Families Western Isles Uist Launch

Safe Families for Children is a charity that provides support to local families with children ages 3-15. They use local and trained volunteers to help support them and offer a helping hand, as families can feel isolated and/or overwhelmed.

Bi-centenary Ceilidh

Come along for the RNLI Bi-centenary ceilidh, from 7:30pm.

 

There will be music from Paul and Alec and the Uist Pipe Band. Enjoy dancing, a bar and a raffle too!

 

£10 Entry. Donations of home baking and raffle prizes on the night would be greatly appreciated. All proceeds donated to local RNLI stations.
